A: This cocoa is a very very dark brown; darker than some I have used in the past that were touted as “black.” This one does add a nice pop of richness, though. I have not been able to find a true black cocoa in years.

I use this black cocoa in making rye breads and chocolate desserts. Chocolate flavor is only minutely detectable in the rye bread because rye is a pretty strong flavor on its own, but does give the bread it’s rich color. The black cocoa does give chocolate desserts a very decadent flavor with just a small amount used. I have never used more than 1 tablespoon in my baking because black cocoa can over power and create a bitter taste. I recommend this product.

Made monster cookies with this for a Halloween party, because I wanted a nice dark color for the cookies.The cookies were just ok, this cocoa adds an odd taste that I can't quite describe. The best I can describe is almost like a dirt flavor. However, I didn't have to bring any home afterwards so maybe others didn't notice the odd flavor.

I made some homemade oreo type cookies with this and filled them with homemade chocolate peppermint icing made with this cocoa, and they were absolutely heavenly! It has become my new favorite Christmas cookie. We've been calling them Coal Cookies because it makes them look absolutely coal black. And everyone absolutely loves them! I've tried making homemade Oreos with regular cocoa, and it just doesn't turn out remotely looking or tasting like Oreos, but this makes absolutely black cookies, with a rich flavor that is even better than Oreos. Definitely happy with it!
