Can you get 4mm threaded inserts for the safety alligator clips? being able to screw them on the test leads would make them more usefull!

I don't think so. The ID is about the same as the "regular" alligator clips, just no threads. I thought this was a pretty useless design. I actually purchased these because I thought I would be able to use the Safety Clips. They are virtually unusable. I missed the photo the vendor included in the listing. The leads, however, are pretty good for the price. Not as nice as Simpson or Fluke leads, but they are also 1/4 the price. I would say 1/4 the price if a good Fluke set at 3/4 the quality.

What is the gauge of the lead's wires? Does it have just a few strands of copper, or multiple?

Fells like many strands of copper. very flexible. Fells same as Fluke meter originals.

Are they compatible with a black test bench 388a multi meter

If you are describing a BK Precision 388a multimeter the answer is yes those leads will work.
