Awful support (so far)
Good points first - it looks well made, an with a Seagate iron Wolf hard drive everything went together perfectly. It even showed up on my laptop as a drive once I had followed the installation instructions. Thereafter I couldn't do any more with it. The router would not allow the Synology drive access to the internet - fair enough.... The automatic setup couldn't complete its process because "the router was not on the approved list - it's a Sky Q router. using all the online help I could find from Sky and Synology the problem was that I had to sort out 'Port Forwarding' through the router. On the Sky help page I got as far as entry into the router set up and opening the port forwarding section, and that's where any help finished as I couldn't identify which port (s) needed to be opnened. I've logged 2 tickets with Synology which have been acknowledged but not answered. Over 24 hours is too long for me - especially as I need to set this up as I work remotely from home, so I'm not at all impressed with Synology support. IF/WHEN I get this sorted I will update my review.

Good unit but one big flaw for me. iTunes problem.
I bought this because my present NAS (Zyxel 325) is nearing the end of its life. I use it mainly to supply music to my Sonos equipment. I download my iTunes music from my Windows pc to my present NAS and this includes iTunes playlists. Amazingly, The DS 120j does NOT download playlists at all directly from iTunes on my pc. I do not understand the technical reasons. If I had known this, there is no way I'd have bought it. There is a workaround apparently, achieved by editing the file names of the playlists. As it stands, I can't face the hassle, but will attempt at sometime. Otherwise I am sure it is a good item. Fairly straightforward to set up.

Perfect network backup location
This is a one bay NAS, so no redundancy for disk failure but this is a perfect unit to send your backups from all your devices. When I say backup, I mean that you still have the files elsewhere.I dropped one of this in a friend of mine house and the device is available over the internet, so the Synology NAS at home can send a backup of itself there every night. This way if my home destroyed, I will still have my data.Another good stuff that the device can record two of your IP cameras with ease if you need this function.Plex also supported, but I did not tested it. It should be fine if no heavy transcoding involved. For less than £100 it is on the similar price range than a Raspberry Pi and an external hard drive enclosure but it works easier.(Yeah, I tried OMV and stuff. It worked but this NAS works easier)If you miss the WiFi option, you can just get one of thise cheap TP-Link travel routers and power it from the USB port. That will grab the WiFi signal and convert it to Ethernet, so you can place the device anywhere in the house.(Still better if you just connect it to one of the LAN ports on your router.)

Good Time Machine replacement
I've wanted an NAS to replace an Apple Time Machine that finally failed. I purchased this with a hard drive. To install as a Time Machine back up wasn't too hard ... but it took me a while to find the right video online to follow. It's all down to users and permissions. All is now working and family laptops etc are all backing up.It's worth noting that the device external material is a bit "plasticky" and feels cheap which may not be to every taste. As ours is not on view it doesn't matter

does the job but requiers some time to make it work
the item arrived safe and on time, only thing was that came with an UK plug insted of the two pin EU (contaced Amazon and found a solution) . The NAS it self is made of good materials and is sturdy construction, no vibrations or noise during opartion. The screws provides are perfect for mouting the drive but not good for closing up the divice, it requiers two to close the box and the screws are not the right size. (had to source them my self, but not a big deal). Conecting it is straight forward but setting it up is not. Had to go online, youtube, tutorials to make it do the basics. There are too many options and loads of technical terms and settings that requier some experiens on IT and network enviroments. After set up it performs well, providing a network drive easely ascesible form everywere.
