Review: Build shelter and First Aid, Great information to know. - The book has a lot information for kids starting going camping. I bought for my hubby grandson and really love it. He is ready for a new adventure of camping and start using all the info from the book. Review: Survival in Todays Concrete Jungle and Future Wilderness - The book was written for young kids. It contains a good many considerations for basic survival in the wilds to include how to start a fire and basic shelter. Of just as important, the book addressed what a kid should do in the concrete jungle to survive when someone is intent on kidnapping them. I grew up in Detroit in the late 40s and 50s. Survival skills of the concrete jungle was relevant to me then as it is for my grandkids in Oakland CA now. There is always someone out there who wants to kidnap you and harm you. I experienced that attempt at age 10 by an old man who wanted me to get into his car for some candy. Fright and flight took over and I escaped the situation. I was also mugged by 5 other kids who hit me from behind and stole my skates at age 9. Problem with kids today, is that they are complacent and have to be constantly reminded that the concrete jungle is not a friendly place and they have to always be observant and trust no one except those they know. Even then, beware if not family. Even though the kids could read, I found that I had to sit down with them and read it to them. Using the book, I showed them how to start fires with flint and steel, how to purify drinking water, how to build a rudimentary shelter. I will be using the book to reemphasize all that as they get older. Book well worth the purchase. Our modern world is one of complacency. Everything is at the grocery store, lights come on, refrigerator has our basics - UNTIL is isn't!!! Those who have been snowed for weeks and lost power know what I am describing. I am also a retired US Marine who has been in many environments that needed basic survival skills and trained to perform them.

Survival in Todays Concrete Jungle and Future Wilderness

Good writing style & content, lacks visuals
I bought this for my 8-yr old who loves all things outdoors. The balance of urban and wilderness survival content is great, because, honestly, it's much more likely for a kid to suddenly find themselves separated from their group in an unfamiliar urban setting than in a wilderness one. The style of writing is easy to understand and follow for kids. And the content is generally good, though how some of the wilderness techniques are presented is questionable. I had to explain to my 8-yr old that drinking surface water passed through a crude sand filter in a discarded plastic bottle was NOT a good idea to do just for fun. In an emergency situation, it's better than nothing, but not something you do in your backyard just for fun! Some disclaimer in the text along those lines would have been good! Otherwise my only other beef is the lack of pictures. There are a few "clip-art" style images, but that's it. Not much for diagrams either. For the target audience, more pictures and diagrams would make this a much more engaging book.

‘Being prepared is a skill that will help you throughout your life’ –necessary skill sets
Author Rick Bayne capitalizes on the fact that at the present time we are seeing more wildfires, floods, wind storms, earthquakes and many other threatening situations that force us to adapt quickly to surviving outside the comfort zone. Though this book is for kids, it also pertains to all age groups who may find times of disaster challenging. Topics covered include basic self defense, safety measures, evading animals, skills - to build a fire and shelter and to find water, maintaining optimal body temperature, some excellent hygiene concepts, first aid skills for broken bones, sprains, cuts, impact injuries, insect bites, animal bites, skin irritation and how to treat each of these, and how to remain safe on the water. The skills discussed are basic, but too few youngsters (and many oldsters!) have practice in performing these skills and are unaware of coping outside the comfort zone. This is a helpful survival kit!

Encouraging
Got this to encourage my grandson to read. These kind of books really work. Kids really like to read about how they can avoid being eaten by a bear....or whatever!

Surprisingly on point advice for young adventure seekers
This book is very well written and offers some very sound advice for youngsters/teens on how to cope when faced with uncertain circumstances. The first couple of chapters apply equally well to living in a big city as they would if you lived in the country. Topics are presented in a clear manner written in easy to understand English. Definitely recommend it for children who adore the outdoors!

Fun Guide for Kids to Learn Essential Skills
I thought this was a well-written book with tons of great information for kids. While potentially a bit challenging for some kids, I think it's a wonderful resource to help develop self-reliance skills and confidence.

Ok a bit dull
It’s ok, a bit dull not a lot of pictures and the topics weren’t that relevant as I was hoping for a more bush craft focus.
