Car Science: An Under-the-Hood, Behind-the-Dash Look at How Cars Work

My 10-year-old grandson adores this book. He takes it on every car ride, and reads it at night before turning out the light. He always has something he wants to show me or talk about with his grandfather (who is an auto mechanic). The text is just the right amount to satisfy curiosity without being overwhelming. The pictures are great. Descriptions are clear, and the discussion of the history and development of engines is really interesting. I'd say that any kid 8-teens with an interest in cars would be thrilled to have this book.

Funny and clearly explained. Kid already loves it already and we keep revisiting it as his understanding broadens. Good pictures, graphics, text - lots of stuff to keep it entertaining.

Purchased for my 8 yr old godson who loved it and read it cover to cover. He was already into cars and this book took his interest to another level. He now likes to " diagnose “ car problems and has further developed his knowledge of cars into how they work. Great gift!

Have given this to two 12 year old boys, both of whom LOVE it. If you know any Top Gear fans (or Hammond fans), this is for them. And really very informative for adults, too!

The pictures are great and the descriptions are clear and can be easily comprehended by younger people and people who know nothing about cars. My grandson loves it. At 7 he can read some of it but lives to be read to as well. Good book.

I bought this for my 6 year old son. While some of the concepts and reading is above his level, he absolutely loves paging through it. One of the things that I really like about it is Car Science is a book that has everything from the physics, chemistry, mechanics.... literally everything about cars, why cars work, or where gas comes from, etc.. It is well worth what I paid for it, and even my 8 year old who is a bit more advanced loves it for explaining things such as how ignition or an engine works. I would definitely recommend this for any mom of boys.

my husband is a car enthusiast. he enjoys tinkering and rebuilding them. my nephew who is 4 has been obsessed with cars since he was old enough to talk. his other obsession is books and reading. my husband doesn't pay any attention to age appropriateness when it comes to toys and gifts for our nephews I guess because he assumes they are just as smart and curious as we were at their age?? anyway, he saw this book and bought it for my nephew. I know this book is intended for 7 years and up but my 4 year old nephew loves this book. there are plenty of pictures in the book and he does like those but he knows how to read and while he may not fully understand the entire concept yet of how engines and transmissions work he can follow along with the concepts loosely and he can explain it back to you. this is now his new favorite book.

My 4 year old loves cars. While this is typically a little advanced for a four year old, he is passionate about cars and has been making me read our car manuals anyway. Nice book.

Another great DK book packed full of information and images. This one is about cars in which I generally have absolutely no interest - except this was about car science and I was hooked at where the two subjects converge. I knew the basics of how an internal combustion engine worked, but I had never connected a piston to a crankshaft or considered how this made the wheels go round. Then to find out about the different numbers of pistons and their arrangement in an engine (from 1 in a lawnmower up to the V8 of the Aston Martin) was all very interesting and enlightening. I already knew the origin of fossil fuels - but then the crude oil was separated into its various components for me We started talking physics of aerodynamics, velocity, terminal velocity, friction, acceleration, centrifugal force, gravity and how these can apply to situations like turning corners, breaking, skidding and how an F1 car works and the driver is protected. This really is a very interesting book and despite other reviewers saying they have bought it for ten year old kids I would love to have a smaller edition of this for my own book shelf (I bought this large book as a gift).
