Q: What is the difference between this and the yra-302b model?

Just the material. The 312 and 314 are the 302 model with a different finish - rosewood and ebony, respectively.

Q: Is the b above the thumbhole a block letter or cursive letter? i have two yamahas, but i've forgotten which model number goes with each.

The one I received is in cursive.

Q: What is the distance between the holes? I'm considering buying this for my 5 year old who is already proficient on the soprano.

It feels like an adult sized recorder. I think it might be a stretch for a 5 year old but it’s definitely a nice instrument for the price. Your child could have this to move up into in e few years.

Q: Does the Ebony finish appear as almost black or does it show wood grain

The one I received is a definite wood grain pattern with medium brown and dark brown faux wood grain appearance (not a solid color as it looks here).
