The vertical part swivels on the end of the arm so it should be able to turn 180. **Q: How wide is the clamp mouth? What is the thickest thing you could clamp this to?** A: I have it clamped on the handle bars of a bike to use my iPad during exercise. I think it is somewhere between 3/4" and 1" in diameter. The arm attaches to the plate by sliding onto the arm.
