WD BLACK SN850X NVMe SSD 2TB (Up to 7,300 MB/s read speed, Up to 6,600 MB/s write speed, M.2 2280, PCIe Gen4, Gaming Storage Expansion, High Performance Internal solid state drive) POWERED BY SANDISK

The most important bit here is that it wasn't affected by "that" Windows 11 update that has been making a hash of other storage sticks in recent weeks. I installed Win 11 fresh, all the updates, all the office apps, some big games (all 50Gb+) without a problem. "Read speeds up to 7300 MB/s, Write speeds up to 6,600 MB/s"? Well, yes, actually. Pretty much on point to the claimed speeds which is surprising. Considering this isn't the latest gen PCI connector, but also considering I'm coming from "old" 2.5" SSDs and even a 4Tb platter SATA drive (5300rpm, lol), the speed at which this does its job feels insane, like we're living in the future. 4Tb on this tiny tiny stick. It's mad how far we've come. In the motherboard I have with a decent size heatsink on it, HW Info reported about 30-35 deg C even under load, so I stopped measuring it. Although I did make a new PC build with it (AMD 9800X3D, 5070Ti, MSI Mag Tomahawk X970E motherboard, Lexar Ares RGB 6000Mhz mem), bear in mind I have max 100Mpbs 5G connection for my rural internet. Previously downloading games of 50Gb plus would need me to leave the PC on overnight. With this build, Doom Dark Ages downloaded in about 90 mins. No exaggeration. I installed windows 11 fresh in about the same time, probably less. Office 365 was downloaded and installed in a ridiculously short amount of time. Maybe it's the CPU too, maybe it's the motherboard and Wifi 6 vs the old mobo having a 1Gb ethernet but I doubt that makes THAT much of a difference over a max 100Mpbs internet connection. Boot times are less than 10 seconds. I should time it, but it's almost like the PC is in sleep mode when booting from a "cold" power on. Loading "heavy" games (eg Doom Dark Ages, Indiana Jones Great Circle etc) is similarly insanely fast. Very happy with the purchase. More so as it was from Amazon Resale as "Good" (it's been perfect and about €20-40 cheaper than new new). I will probably end up getting a second one in time.

The WD_BLACK SN850X in the 2TB capacity is a definitive update to an already legendary line, firmly positioning itself as a top-tier performer in the PCIe Gen 4 NVMe market. For any modern enthusiast or power user—especially gamers running large titles on a high-performance system like my Windows machine, Gengar—this drive provides a tangible upgrade in responsiveness, load times, and overall system snappiness. Blazing Speed and Consistent Performance The advertised sequential read speed of up to 7,300 MB/s is backed up by equally impressive sequential writes of up to 6,600 MB/s (for the 2TB model). These speeds are pushing the theoretical limits of the PCIe 4.0 interface. Gaming Load Times: The most noticeable benefit is the near-instantaneous loading of huge environments in modern games. The drive's strong random read/write IOPS performance (up to 1,200K/1,100K) means not only do sequential transfers fly, but the small-file operations that govern OS responsiveness and application launching are incredibly fast. Sustained Transfers: Unlike some budget drives that choke after transferring a large file, the SN850X maintains its blistering speed. This is crucial for content creators or engineers who frequently move massive media libraries or project files. Endurance and Longevity The 2TB model is rated for 1,200 TBW (Terabytes Written), backed by a 5-year limited warranty. This endurance rating is excellent for a consumer drive and offers significant peace of mind. Given that the average user rarely hits these thresholds, this drive is built to last far beyond the typical upgrade cycle. Form Factor and Management The standard M.2 2280 form factor makes installation straightforward in nearly any desktop or laptop supporting PCIe Gen 4. For those installing into systems with limited airflow, the non-heatsink version is sleek and easily fits under a motherboard's built-in M.2 thermal guard. Western Digital's WD_BLACK Dashboard software is worth downloading (for Windows users). It allows you to monitor drive health, thermal performance, and activate Game Mode 2.0. This feature is designed to optimize the drive’s operation when detecting game launches, ensuring maximum sustained speed by disabling low power states and prioritizing game-related I/O. The Verdict If you are currently running an older PCIe 3.0 NVMe drive or, worse, a SATA SSD, the WD_BLACK SN850X is arguably the best single upgrade you can make to your PC. It offers world-class performance for the PCIe 4.0 generation, excellent longevity, and the reliable engineering expected from the WD_BLACK line. For a primary boot/gaming drive that will eliminate loading screens and maintain rapid response times, this 2TB model is a stellar, professional choice.

WD_Black SN850X NVMe SSD 4TB (Up to 7,300 MB/s read speed, up to 6,600 MB/s write speed. M.2 2280, PCIe Gen 4 Powered by Sandisk Very fast as an external boot drive for my Mac. I have used this for 2 years so far and it has been a game changer for me to have external storage fast enough to boot from. I use it for gaming and everyday business use. No problems with it at all, completely seamless performance. Very good quality item and 2 years ago was very good value for money. I wish I had bought two!

I bought the 4TB ver when it was on sale for £208, and at that price, it's hands-down the best Gen 4 SSD deal you could ask for. Its reputation for top-tier performance, quality build, and solid reliability is well documented over the years. I bought mine specifically for demanding tasks, a mix of heavy workloads, gaming, and general everyday computing. Even at its usual price, the SN850X is right up there with the best Gen 4 drives that include DRAM, like the Samsung 990 Pro and Crucial T500. It strikes a great balance: more affordable than the 990 Pro with performance that feels very similar in day-to-day use, while offering better sustained write speeds under heavy load compared to the T500, which is a plus for large file transfers or content creation. For console use, it's the same, a top tier choice, keep in mind you will need a heatsink for it if that's your usage, either a third party or official one (more expensive). However, if you're a budget gamer, you'd be just fine with a cheaper DRAM-less SSD. Just a heads-up, the actual usable space you get after formatting is about 3.6TB. This is normal for SSDs due to space reserved for performance and longevity (over-provisioning). Getting this drive for £208 was a no-brainer for a top-end, high-capacity SSD with DRAM. If you need speed for demanding applications and gaming, and especially if you see it near that sale price, grab it. Highly recommended!

I bought two of these for a new PC before the prices went insane. Performance is great - installation was super easy, although that was more on the motherboard than these SSDs. Was able to format them both very easily - one is my system drive and Windows 11 installed very quickly - the time to boot is very impressive too. I'll buy a third, when the prices return to normal!

Works great

Very easy to install very fast boot time enough storage and reduces stuttering in games really well especially when game mode is on overall I think the SSD is one of the best.
