Is this microwave safe?

Yes. These are dishwasher and microwave safe. They do get pretty hot though. I really LOVE these dishes. I use them in the fall, SO CUTE!

It concerns me that it gets hot when in microwave? Any thoughts?

Some dishes get hot because they have metals in the ceramics or in the glaze. These dishes do not get so hot as they can't be handled. I often put the mug in the microwave to reheat my coffee for 45 seconds or so and I do not notice that the mug gets extra hot.

Are the pieces available separately? Just in case of breakage.

Don’t think so. In my first shipment, all the dinner plates were broken. I contacted Amazon thru web site and they promised to replace ASAP and they replaced everything. I believe all pieces are packed in separate boxes but packed together in one big box.
