Q: how many watts does it consume on idle?

When NAS is idle it should put the HDD in Sleep Mode and the power consumption during that time is 20.943W.

Q: Can you install 4 mechanical drives and an M.2 as a buffer?

I have the 2-Bay version of this model - not sure what you mean by "buffer", but the supported strategy is to use the M.2 in pairs as a caching strategy. There is a specific configuration and monitoring for read/write caching.

Q: Can you upgrade the ram?

The TS-453E is equipped with 8GB of RAM that is not expandable, meaning it cannot be increased in capacity.

Q: Does the apple time machine functionality work again? it stopped working due to software limitations.
