Fairview 40L Women's Travel Backpack, Winter Night Blue

Love this model only, with the dedicated laptop sleeve flat against the back as opposed to the newest style with the sleeve oddly/awkwardly set in the middle of the bag. (Why, Osprey?) It was such a surprise, how much I could shoehorn into this thing, especially when omitting compression cubes from the equation. A suggestion as to how to best pack this bag that does not include compression cubes: Start with your largest item flat on a bed. (For me it was a Packtowl.) Proceed to layer every item of clothing you have in flat layers, largest to small, at the finish, setting your awkwardly shaped solids like a hair dryer, couple pairs of shoes, right in in the center of the flat pile as the penultimate step. Now: Neatly fold the layered clothing up around the items as if wrapping a present, creating a contained bundle/package you now lift and set inside the backpack sitting on the floor. Use the largest Bagail mesh laundry wash bag (sold in a set on Amazon) to hold all underwear and socks; set the mesh bag atop the "package" inside the bag, tucking the mesh-bag edges into the Osprey. Sit on the top of the Osprey if necessary to zip it. Using these Bagail mesh bags stops anything from catching in zippers in addition to keeping the messier stuff contained; they become your extra "pockets" inside the bag. I was also able to set an unfolded hanging dop kit on top of all this, folding its edges into the edges of the backpack. And STILL, I'd find room to tuck random items in on the sides! The material and zippers seemed durable and stain resistant if you were careful choosing the color; checked this bag on an Emirates flight so it traveled in the hold. I wouldn't bother getting the model including the Daypacks everyone so rightly complain holds so little or buying other Osprey Daypacks a la carte; a North Face Borealis from 2012 was far, far more commodious as a Day Pack (doubling as the under-seat personal item on any flight) and could easily be attached via loops on its shoulder straps to loops on the Osprey's shoulder straps for front carry with a pair of 1 1/2-inch large carabiners. Alternatively, a $16 clip set is sold on Etsy to modify the subtle non-standard-size strap clips on the Osprey to attach to any knapsack. I believe Osprey's done away with the front carry clips on the latest 40L and 55L models anyway, but being able to rig an extra bag up front is a valuable extra feature. Also: It's my firm belief having the stretchy water bottle pockets on the 40L and 55L's is overrated; if the bag's super-full, the pockets cannot be used in any iteration. You're going to be using some different Day pack as you run around on your trip anyway, leaving this bigger pack back at the hotel, and that Daypack will have the crucial stretchy external pockets. I will add that the top pocket on the Osprey for the passport etc was well hidden and never contracted into non-usability when this bag was packed to the gills. I also liked how all the straps could be zipped away and the cover hidden once the straps were all unfurled. Didn't feel like the back made me sweat unduly, and it was hot as blue blazes in Italy this August. I am 5'5" and 120 pounds; I was shocked at how well this model bag fit, especially if you knew how to take advantage of the shoulder clips bringing the bag in flatter to the back and had the hip flaps at the correct level. When all trains were suddenly canceled at Milan train station, I stood with this on my back for two hours straight effortlessly/with zero strain whatsoever. I also appreciated the fact that all zipper pulls including on the laptop section could be made to align, and that I could lock the entire bag with a single $6.50 string-style Master lock. The only cons with the bag were the ability to fit enough pairs of shoes inside. And the ID pocket for a business card was so subtle that I don't know that any Lost Luggage-service anywhere would understand there was an ID to be found in this hidden pocket. Know that a standard roller carryon will fit slightly more, but if you're climbing hills to an AirBnb or hostel anywhere in Europe, such a bag won't serve you well. A sporting goods shop in Milan happened to have a number of these bags from past years on display, so I was actually able to compare and contrast. This model, with the laptop slot set against the back, seemed the best of the lot.

I’ve been using the Osprey Kyte 42L as my travel backpack for more than 10 years, and I was hoping to upgrade to a more travel-focused pack with a separate laptop compartment. As a petite woman with a small frame, finding a backpack that fits properly can be challenging, so after seeing several recommendations for the Osprey Fairview 40L, I was hopeful that it would be the right replacement. There is a lot to like about the Fairview. The adjustable torso system made it much easier to get a comfortable and supportive fit compared with many other travel backpacks I’ve tried, and the hip belt and shoulder straps felt very supportive once adjusted. For petite women in particular, I think the adjustability is one of its strongest features. Unfortunately, a few design choices kept it from working for me. The biggest drawback is the lack of a dedicated water bottle pocket, which is something I use frequently while travelling. I was also disappointed by the amount of padding between the laptop compartment and the main compartment. I felt that I would need to be very mindful of how I packed the main compartment to avoid putting too much pressure on my laptop. I also ran into an issue with the frame itself. Although the adjustable frame provided excellent support, once I had the hip belt and shoulder straps positioned where they felt best on my body, the top of the frame sat awkwardly above and behind my shoulders. It wasn’t necessarily uncomfortable, but the fit felt a little strange and not quite as natural as I had hoped. Overall, the Fairview 40L ultimately wasn’t the right backpack for me, but I would still give it five stars. It is a well-designed, supportive, and highly adjustable travel backpack, and I can absolutely see why so many people love it. I would still recommend that other women—especially those with smaller frames who have struggled to find a supportive travel pack—give it a try, since backpack fit is so individual. For my particular needs, though, the compromises weren’t enough to justify replacing the Kyte 42L that has served me so well for more than a decade. That says more about how well the Kyte has worked for me than it does about the quality of the Fairview.

I am a huge fan of Osprey products after getting this bag along with a few others. Its huge and very expandable but still fits in an overhead compartment or even under the seats in most airlines. I use it for all my travel and I like the backpack/suitcase combo as sometimes I want to carry it on my back and other times I want to treat it like a suitcase. The straps fold in and are covered by a zippered area when using it as a suitcase so this keeps all the straps from dangling. I love the teal color and all the stitching, handles and pockets are really sturdy. The material is waterproof and the zippers will take a beating as I always over stuff it but they always hold strong. Its pricy but will last for ages and with so many pockets and zippered areas, you can store anything yet still have it easily accessible. I highly recommend Osprey products

I travelled to Thailand for 2 1/2 with this bag and a personal item and it was perfect. I had to pack and repack several times because we moved locations a lot and it was really easy to do so with this bag. It can fit a ton of stuff and it’s very durable. I think it’s worth the price. It’s pretty weather resistant as well. I got it wet and muddy and it cleaned off really easily

I’m 71 + years old 5’2” ~135 lb woman. I went to Europe for a month with this Osprey backpack and a carryon suitcase. I was able to get all my gear in both but found the backpack was a lifesaver!! I could always find a spot to put awkward things in it. I asked a lot from the zippers and they, as everything else, performed beautifully!!! Amazing to me, regardless of my (terrible lumbar and sacral) spine, carrying the pack on my back was a breeze- really! The weight distribution on my hips, secure adjustable clips and (lifesaving) pockets, made it extremely useful and easy. Loved the way air could get through to my back to help keep me cool (as We were in Paris for the horrible heat wave in 2026.)

Extraordinarily roomy, I bought this for a 2+ week trip overseas where I didn't want to have to check bags. This was the 'extra' personal item for 2 of us. It initially was for all our electronics (ipads, chargers, headphones), books, my purse, miscellaneous travel luxuries (travel soaps, tide packets, etc.), items for immediate access (sunglasses, wallets), and critical paperwork (passports, printed maps and hotel info). We were moving from place to place starting in Ireland, flying to Germany, driving from west to east and ending up in Vienna, so we stayed in a lot of hotels and had a car with a small-ish trunk (2 seat convertible). This meant it was tossed around and carried EVERYWHERE. When our little suitcases were at capacity (was cold in Ireland so we bought big bulky sweaters because Germany was HOT and we weren't prepared for the cold), we started shoving all the souvenirs into this one. Many were VERY fragile. This thing just kept swallowing more an more. I am convinced it could actually hold more than our roller bags. While the carrying features such as the side zipper where we stored paperwork, the small pocket on the top for wallets and sunglasses, and the 'packable' hip belt and shoulder harness with a hard back were brilliant and made it easy to haul around what was now a VERY heavy backpack, there were some areas that I found more and more irritating as we went on and are the reason for 4 instead of 5 stars: - Other than the small pocket at the top, there were NO zippered pockets anywhere inside or outside. This meant that small items we wanted to separate to avoid getting lost due to accidentally falling out when opening, or due to their value had to go into the suitcase. Opening the entire pack was unavoidable and because of the soft nature, everything we had shoved in there would start spilling out. This meant the little pocket on top was maxed out very quickly. - While the zippered 'cover' to store the harness and belt were great when closed, you have to roll it up and shove it down as far as it would go to keep it from hanging out when open. It didn't really come out when you do this, but it seemed a lazy way to do this. Probably standard, and it worked, so maybe it's just me. - Me personally, I would have liked to be able to keep the belt stored away and just have the shoulder harnesses out for use because the belt got in the way much more than it helped. Maybe if the zippered part would let you do this and keep the belt partially sealed up, but it didn't seem designed to do that. Maybe if we had gone up a size, they would have had amenities to accommodate some of the issues I brought up, but the next size was just too big. This one was already larger than anticipated. This was ultimately a good thing for us, but any larger would have been much too heavy once packed full as this one almost was. This would be a great pack if you only want one item that can be carried wherever you need as it is large enough and juuuust fits under the seat (you will have to put your feet on it), but it is larger than you might expect as a regular 'personal' carryon item. Also beware that there is only the one additional zippered pocket and there are none inside (not counting the side zipper access for very thin items). Also, I LOVE this color!

This backpack is very well made and durable. The hip belt does help with taking pressure and weight off of your shoulders. The only issue I had with the backpack was when I wanted to zip up the straps and carry it more like a suitcase. It does not zip all of the way around, so part of the top of the shoulder straps stick out on top. This backpack carries quite a bit and has the separate slot that you can put something very thin in, for example a laptop. The design in the back makes it cooler and comfortable to carry with plenty of padding.

I am so so happy with this back pack. I did a lot of research looking for a back pack that I could take to Europe for a 2 week trip. I didnt want to take a roller suitcase as we had quite a few train trips that we needed to take between cities. This back pack has turned out to be everything I needed. Its very comfortable to carry (20+ min walks) and even packed full it doesn't feel heavy at all. We packed fairly light for our trip (washing clothes as we travel) but it really fit everything I needed plus some room for souvenirs. The clip system inside was definitely a plus to help keep all the clothes compact. I would recommend this back pack to anyone traveling that wants something easy and light weight, no issues as a carry on either in a very full plane.

This is my wife's pack and I'll repeat what I said for the men's version: Back home after 26 days of living out of this pack and carrying it on trip across Europe. It held up beautifully. Fit into every carry-on and storage locker be it plane, train, or boat. Comfortable, functional, and plenty roomy. No complaints.
