KOHLER nails it again. This is the strainer basket of my dreams.
Let's be clear: I don't spend a lot of time day dreaming about drains, but if I did, I'd dream about this one. I bought a new house, needed a sink, and got the strainer that appeared to match the sink without thinking much about it. Happy surprise, Kohler nails it yet again. Here's the deal: the sink was pricey, so I was a bit sour on the whole idea of spending a lot on something that waste water and food particles get washed away through. In the past, I considered a sink and plumbing sort of standard, without an eye to design or improvement. The strainer basket that fits into the drain makes up for every lame, poorly-designed, leaky sink plug I've ever lived with. The construction of the piece is clearly very good. If you've never seen a nice sink or drain set (as I previously had not) you may not realize that in some scenarios like this, you get what you pay for. The composition and construction are great - high quality materials. Constructed well, and beautiful to look at. But the best surprise is that the strainer is a marvel of design! It has four little black rubbery feet on the underside of the basket. It rests inside the actual drain of the sink and the feet make it stand just above the basin of the drain. It allows for water flow so the drain actually drains better/quicker. Furthermore, and this is the best part, if you press down in the center of the drain on the knob, the feet are flexible and will tuck themselves further down into the drain with a little downward pressure, in effect shutting the drain. It doesn't require major effort, or specific alignment as do some drain basket/plugs combos. Easiest, least-frustrating drain basket ever. I love it. Why not invest a little more in a product that just works better by default?

This is just what I wanted
The tailpiece and nuts on my replaced drain were junk so I ordered this Kohler unit. Individual pieces at the hardware store added up to more than the price of this item.I find it to be a quality item. Sure one can take a big step up and get a premium unit for a hundred dollars but that's a little rich for my blood. This one matches the quality of my sink and works just fine and was easy to install. Make sure you have some plumber's putty on hand to do the job correctly.I had no issue with the basket. Push it into the sink and it's closed. Lift it straight up about a quarter inch and it's open. I don't see the problem. I don't know how long the stubby rubber fingers at the bottom of the strainer will last, but even if I have to buy a new basket in the near future this item is still a bargain. The rim around the drain is very bright shiny chrome as is the tail piece. My sink is brushed stainless so it's not exactly a match. However, no one is going to notice and one could even accept the notion that it looks fine like it is. I know that I have.

Looks great!
I bought a Kohler sink at the local blue hardware store, but they didn't have any Kohler sink strainers. So I ordered 2 of these after finding out that this is the recommended accessory/part to my sink. I got them in today and they are just as described. It is a shiny chrome look though (my sink is more of a brushed stainless steel). It will be a few weeks before it is installed but so far they are great! I ordered on Friday and got them on Monday so very fast shipping! They were new in box as well.

AVOID THIS CHEAP PRODUCT!!
This is a very cheap product. After we had it installed, the plumber had to come back twice since the drain was leaky. The first time the plumber recaulked but explained that we had, unbeknownst to us, chosen the lowest of the low end sink strainers (one that in his opinion shouldn't even have the Kohler name). When the caulking didn't solve the problem we got a different one, having learned that the good ones (meaning the ones that don't leak!) cost more but are much heavier and better made and -- this is important -- screw in. So don't waste your time with this model. What you want is the Kohler 8801-CP and not model 8813. The 8801 is not more expensive when you factor in the return visits from the plumber!! Kohler either shouldn't sell the cheap one at all or should explain that there are advantages to using the more expensive one that screws in.

Trust Kohler quality - my plumber agrees
I would not use the inexpensive home improvement store generic brands. I trust Kohler to use with my new Kohler sink, and this drain looks good and works great. I tried an inexpensive plastic drain and it leaked as soon as the plumber left, so I installed this one and the leak is gone. Spend a little more and avoid problems!
