Is the EP2 a lot softer and easier to insert than the original? If so, is it a lot more comfortable?

Yes, the new EP2 are softer, easier to insert, and easier to make a seal if the old ones don't work or are too small for you. Overall, a better design and more reliable seal. I know some think they fit worse, and it's likely they have small ear canals. For me, the EP2 v1 sealed well because they were slightly bigger. They changed the design to EP2 v2 and now the are smaller. This will please many people but makes them unusable for me. The EP2 v1 had a blue hard plastic cover over the ceramic shaft. If your EP2 have no hard plastic on them, you have EP2 v2. Either way, expect to feel some mild discomfort when putting anything in your ear for the first time. Also, if you find they inserted easily but "didn't work", then it's likely you didn't obtain a proper air-tight seal which is essential for this product.

What is the lanyard used for?

Lanyard is only on the product called New, second generation, not the original. New, second generation is AWFUL design, not as effective as original.

If the earplanes are on a flight but not used (they remain in the package), does that still counts as 1 usage?

Good question. No. They still have not been used. I actually use the same pair for each flight in the series to our destination. I use a new pair for the return trip home.

Does the next generation work better than the original?

EP2 works better for me because the size and seal is better for my ear canal size and shape. Everyone is different so you should ensure you are getting a proper seal on your ear prior to using them in flight. The originals were not as big and there is a size for children.
