When will my canker sore go away?

The pain will get better, temporarily, but will recur as long as the canker is active. Ambesol, a preparation of benzocaine, is an analgesic, not an antiviral agent. It does not promote healing of the canker or any other infection: it reliefs the pain caused by the infection. You will need to re-apply this for persistent/recurrent pain according to the instructions provided with the product.

Yes, a Q-tip is fine to use. You can squeeze a dab of the gel to the tip and directly apply it to your mouth sore or tongue sore. You can also apply it directly from the tube onto the sore. That's much easier and is what I do. Since I don't share my tube with anyone else there is no problem of contamination. I also take a Q-tip or piece of tissue and pat the sore to dry it a little before applying the Anbesol. In that way the gel works better and stays on the sore longer. Ambusol works very well to dull the annoying pain!
