And i just got red reactions around the spots I applied it to. What’s causing this?** A: I definitely understand your concern, so I want to start off right away by reassuring you that redness is absolutely normal when using the serum. To explain the serum a little better, hydroquinone works to inhibit melanin production in the treated areas. Without melanin, the skin will lighten. However, dark spots often permeate all the way through each layer of skin, and the upper layer is mostly dead skin cells which are unaffected by melanin anyway, so hydroquinone can be quite slow to show results. To speed things up, we include our formulation of acids to help speed up cell turnover so the dead spots will peel away. Cell turnover is natural, the upper layer of skin is being replaced all the time, but speeding it up can cause the skin to peel, exposing sensitive new skin that's often a pink or red color. When this happens, it is important to let the skin peel naturally and not to pick at it, or to try and remove the layer of skin yourself as it may not be ready to peel yet and this can cause undue irritation. To help strengthen the new skin you should use a high quality, nourishing moisturizer as soon as the serum dries, as well as a soothing product like aloe vera or rose hips. (A retinol moisturizer works very well with this serum, as retinol boosts the effects of hydroquinone) You should also wear high-SPF sunscreem while in the sun, both to protect the sensitive skin and to prevent rebound pigmentation. For most people, the redness will go away on its own in just a few days, though it can take up to a few weeks in some cases. If you have not seen improvement in the next few days, you can take a break from the serum and just use a moisturizer and soothing product until your skin has had time to strengthen back to normal. You can then start the serum back up slowly as in the beginning, using the serum every other day and working your way up to daily and finally twice daily use. I’m confident with continued use you will begin to see results, and the redness will go away. I purchased a new one to replace my old one from February 2026 and noticed the pagaging had changed. That's when I noticed the ingredients had changed as well. I'll see if this has similar results to the previous formula.Update: 07/24/26Tested it on some rough spots from acne on my forehead and now it's cleared out. My forehead is smooth and soft. So I'm upping the review to 5 stars. "Mask-ne" (or ongoing acne resulting from chronic mask-wearing). And the price is great, too!I was hesitant to stop my Mary Kay Timewise regimen (non-retinol). But my skin looks great! It has really helped with the acne, and my skin looks very healthy (yes, I am still wearing masks every day at work - last summer my face continuously broke out with the heat and humidity + constant masking, this summer acne has not really been an issue).
