Very good history book. I've also seen professors using this book. The only difference is that my reprint is 2015 and theirs is 1986. In the preface of this book, its written that this publication has been approved by the Government of India as a "University-Level Text Book". The book is well quoted, I mean throughout the whole book you'll find the source (at the bottom) from where the text has been taken. At the end of the book, there's an Appendix where you'll find all the 32 Sultans of Lahore and Delhi chronologically from 1206-1526. Similarly, there are also Appendixes for Bahmani Sultans and Vijaynagar Rulers. There's a separate chapter on Architectural Monuments of Sultans. You'll also find a sub-para or sub-chapter on Iqta system. There's also a separate chapter on muslim historians of medieval India and records of foreign travelers. In the main text, you'll find detailed descriptions of all the rulers. Plus, there are also maps. Most of all, its not biased and you'll like reading it.

Leaving nothing to be said for any other historian. He describes everything for a grad student to know, even more. Be it UPSC or semester exams, can totally rely on it. Very impressive flow, concrete language to crack in the beginning, but will soon adapt after first chapter struggle. A VERY AUTHENTIC HISTORIAN. J.L. Mehta, does great justice to neglected medival India.

Content is enough to cover for history optional medieval part. Not to much like pappu singh prajapat not to less like Satish Chandra medieval consist of one book only. Simple language. Satish Chandra medieval history can also be substituted with this one.
