Thursday Afternoon

I discovered Brian Eno's Ambient music decades ago. It has no meledy. All it has is mood. This album, like his others, is excellent for meditation, relaxation, and even writing (which is how I found it) because it takes you to another alternative consciousness. I have also played it for my patients. This is beyond 'new age' music. It is mesmerizing. Play on repeat.

This is a wonderful piece of music, about 61 minutes in length. Its ambient quality is so soothing and calming it gently dissolves mental clutter and stress, and then transports the listener to a peaceful place. It makes great background music and does not distract from doing tasks. Yet, Thursday Afternoon is also great for meditation, when silence is just too quiet. Brian Eno was wise to make this music a long piece. This is an issue with other artists who create such lovely music, but keep it too short. Thursday Afternoon is neither sad nor happy. Simply peace and contentment.I first heard Thurday Afternoon back in the spring of 1986. It made such a good impression on me that for 24 years I searched for its name & artist so that I could purchase the CD. Now, I have it and I am so grateful! It has been so worth the wait. I have a lot of music, but if I were allowed to have only one piece, this would be the one for me. My eleven year old daughter, who prefers pop music, loves Thursday Afternoon, too. She is less likely to become overwhelmed and stressed when we listen to it during her homeschooling day. Thank you, Brian Eno, for this beautiful work. We love it!

Brian Eno has created a wonderous conundrum. How can a piece of music be minimalist and yet have a underlying sonic density and complexity that will intrigue and please a truly discerning listener. But you must listen closely to truly appreciate the rich and dense yet minimalist themes that lay behind the variations on the simple piano melody which lies in front of the deeply richly packed yet subtle synthesizer themes which permeate the the background of the sound-scape of this piece.And yet this piece has an other value to the discerning but harried listener. There is a Zen like quality to this piece that can sooth the troubled and agitated listener. This piece at 61 minutes can bring a delightful peace into disturbed world. It's embarrassing. It seems like every time I get a Brian Eno ambient CD and listen to it for a while, I become absolutely convinced that it's the single best ambient album I've ever heard. This has happened four times so far: with Ambient 2, Ambient 4, Neroli and now Thursday Afternoon. But I have to say that now I really, _really_ believe that Thursday Afternoon is the best ambient album I've ever heard. It's so soft and ethereal it's like it isn't even there, and yet as it plays you find yourself unwinding and relaxing into a better state of consciousness. I don't know where Eno gets his ambient mojo, but it's powerful stuff. So again: this is definitely the _best_ ambient album I've ever heard... until the next Eno album.

...and while you're AT IT, keep a notebook and favorite pen handy. It inspires you to wanna write beautiful Poetry because it subliminally forces you to reflect on a calm level. It's a masterpiece and I only play it on a Thursday afternoon that I happen to take off from work. I especially love to play it on those Thursday afternoons when it rains.

"Thursday Afternoon" is a delightful treat for the ambient music enthusiast. It envelopes the listener in a poignant moment freezing it forever in time. A single chord settles like mist and hangs there for the duration of the piece keeping us in a state of suspended animation. A delicate glissando twinkles like a firefly adding a sparkle of color to the serene pastel landscape. Then it fades only to be replaced by another. "Thursday Afternoon" is the very definition of ambient music; aural wallpaper that just hangs in the air and never changes. But what gorgeous wallpaper it is. My cat sat listening, one ear cocked, in rapt attention until I started grinding the coffee beans and broke the spell.

A favourite since the 80's, Eno made this to explore the possiblity of what was possible with a CD. Before the CD technology a piece lasting an hour could only be heard in perfomance or on tape. The technical limitations of vinyl made it impossible whereas cassettes never matched the sound quality a CD or LP could reach.This is a very, very ambient record. Based around a collection of loops sequenced to play with almost infinate variety. It is a beautiful drifing piece that would have fitted well into Eno's earlier Ambient Series. Its closest relative is probably his collaboration with Harold Budd  Ambient 2: The Plateaux Of Mirror  or his early Music for Films and Airports projects. This is one of those records for which the word ethereal was born to describe. It floats almost mist-like around the ears. This is music designed to be both listened to and to inhabit the space around it. For something so delecate it has a surprisingly physical presence.It is clearly one of the most important ambient pieces and you can hear its influence in many later works, especially those of Gas whose  Nah Und Fern  is recommended to fans of this. For the unitiated this is either beautiful or dull, colourless, and boringly overlong. If your ears want excitement this isn't the place to look. There is a slow creeping pleasure to be found in the quietest of places and Eno has found its soundtrack here. Ambient 2: The Plateaux Of MirrorNah Und Fern

Pure ambient Eno. You could put the one track cd on and leave it on for the day and still enjoy it! It doesn’t intrude, it doesn’t annoy, it doesn’t bore, but at any time you can concentrate on it and get something from it. I wish similar artists could find the magi ingredient that achieves this- not many can.

What a magician Brian Eno is. I'm transported into another realm, any day of the week.

Perfect afternoon's repose; one track, straight 60 minutes relaxing with no whale noises--one could almost call it propofol without a guilty conscience; superb cover provides setting images--fits well with Brian's classic Ambient era but even more halcyon.
