but really useful then.
Just a little difficult to understand at the beginning, but really useful then.

Great tool for the dinghy racer
I always had trouble remembering tacking angles and average wind direction on long upwind beats, and could never do the math to figure out whether to jib set or bear away on downwind legs. Call me math challenged, but there's a lot going on in a dinghy and my brain just can't do math while trying to keep the boat level and avoiding collisions all at the same time. Finding line bias without flapping sails on starting the line also requires a little head math that I often get wrong. Even when I would write average upwind angles, I'd often have trouble picturing how shifts would affect the race. I tried to make a few homemade protractors that I could set to the average wind direction but they quickly fell apart with use.Enter the Tackmaster. This is a godsend for those who can't sail and chew gum at the same time like me. Now I have no problem figuring out line bias, and I have a quick reminder of average upwind angles during the upwind beats. Figuring out jibe set is easy too.I do find I use this a bit differently on upwind beats than perhaps intended. I sail on a lake with lots of shifts and find it impractical to continuously input each shift into the Tackmaster. Maybe I would do it on a longer keelboat course, but I'm too busy working the main and tiller to keep fiddling with the shift dial on the Tackmaster. Instead, I find the average of shifts during pre-race beats, and then just leave it there for most of the upwind beat. If I see we're sailing above or below the median, I use that to decide my tacks. That way when the wind shifts back again I don't need to fiddle with the dial again. So I find it more useful to just leave it on the average. If I see a persistent shift, I might push it over. I will shift the inner dial over just before I get to the windward mark and use the information to decide on jibe set or not. Same thing downwind. In heavy winds and chaotic racing conditions it can be a challenge to find a second and a free hand to adjust the dials, so it's sometimes better just to set it at the average and leave it alone, or sometimes I'll have my crew wear it instead. On balance a very helpful little device that I use regularly now. Of course, it's important to remember to keep your head out of the boat in dinghy racing, so best not to rely too much on your instruments, but used as a guide, the Tackingmaster is worth using.
