One approach to picking up surf guitar
This has to be reviewed in the context of 'Surf: Guitar Play-Along Volume 23'. There is considerable overlap in the material. This one has 'Mr. Moto', 'Shake 'n' Stomp', and 'Surfin' Safari' while 23 has 'Walk Don't Run'. Seven songs are common to the two. The presentation is entirely different. For this one Rubin chatters on about inversions, triads, Mixolydian and Phrygian modes and so forth and gives some hints on finger placement. The CD has the full version and some broken out material. If the technical discussion makes sense to you this might be the preferable choice, but it is Greek to me. The tabs and CD are fine.

Best of Surf Guitar
Good Surf lesson books are hard to find and this one is a gem. The tab, for the most part isn't challenging for an anyone but a raw beginner. Some of the detail in the solos takes a while to master but its fun trying. I pull this book out every time I sit down to practice or noodle to work on my accuracy and speed. Great fun! I didn't give it five stars for two reasons: As another reviewer mentioned it would have been better if all of the songs were guitar solos and a CD so you could hear the songs is badly needed. I found most of them on Itunes and Amazon but there are a few that just aren't published, at least by the artist named in the book.

Nice little book
This book does a good job of showing the important parts to be learned on several surf songs. While the music isn't exactly complex in terms of actual guitar technique, it's great to have really good transcriptions of the parts and comments. Even more seasoned players might find a few small details that the ear or the brain sometimes miss when learning a tune by ear. The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is because I could do with more instrumentals in place of the analysis of guitar in vocal surf songs - although I confess even this minor "flaw" is enjoyable.

Surf Music
If like me you love the Surf Guitar sound then this book is a must. All the music in it has been transcribed note for note from the original recordings made about 1963. add to this reverb on the guitar and you can sound like the original records. I can't praise this book highly enough.
