Who is the real Christopher Columbus? Excellent book!
If you really want to learn about the REAL Christopher Columbus, I recommend this book. Well written- excellent read. I recommend reading to kids and teens.

Good source of info on Columbus.
Go to a source closer to the time of Columbus to find out what Columbus was really like and the purpose behind his voyages.

200 years later...
...and this is still a great read. Irving's research must have been extensive and brought Columbus on to center stage and acknowledged his tremendous acomplishments while including his weaknesses and failures as well.
