How thick can the phone be to work properly?

Any standard smart phone will work fine.

Even when the arm is tightened down to the point I can't crank it, I still get a little side movement. Anyone know how to fix this?

You would have to use epoxy. I had to. Pretty much pull the arm apart and re-glue with epoxy.

Will the tube work with the standard 1inch RAM ball mount?

It will not work directly with 1” ball mounts. We offer an adapter on our website that will allow you to attach this to 1” ball mounts.
