Mother of the Groom: Everything You Need to Know to Enjoy the Best Wedding Ever

Missed The Mark For Me
I agree completely with the review by C. J. on April 22, 2008. This is a wedding planning book. If you, as MOG, are planning and executing the wedding yourself, with very little input from the MOB or even the couple -- if you are acting as the wedding coordinator -- it could be useful. I also suspect this is just the author's 'Mother of the Bride' book with "bride" and "daughter" changed to "groom" and "son'. There are at least a couple places, however, where that switch was not even made, so it refers to your daughter (the bride). It also is geared toward a type of wedding that is alien to my world. Although the copyright is nearly 10 years ago, it states that "...the average wedding budget across the country (is) between $25,000 and $50,000", and the author has talked to "...many parents of the bride who say that spending $150,000 on the wedding was worth it just to make their daughter happy." Perhaps that is true, in some other alternate universe, but in my world $150,000 will buy you a very nice, middle class 4-bedroom house, not just a starter home. It is not what you spend on a one-day/weekend event. At the same time, the author suggests cutting costs by bartering your services, such as using your talent at designing web pages to create a site for a caterer in exchange for their product. Right.... If you have talents that can be bartered, want to make that effort, and find willing partners, more power to you; but you probably know how to do that already and do not need to be told in this context. She also gives lip service to the couple, or the MOB, deciding what they want the wedding to look like, and how it is their place to make decisions, but proceeds to tell you how to handle areas that are definitely the others' responsibilities. The bottom line is that if your marrying children have asked/allowed you to create a lavish, extravagantly expensive wedding for them and you have no clue how to do that, buy this book. It is not that expensive and will fit within your $50,000 budget. If, like me, you are looking for suggestions on modern etiquette and what is expected these days of the groom's family (the standard wedding for my son's friends is nothing like the ones my friends and family, and I, had a generation back), keep looking.

Very Comprehensive Guide.
I got this book for my mom. She found it very informative, albeit a little over the top at times. I only gave it 4 starts because there are several parts that cater to a more old fashion sense of weddings. (i.e teas with the grooms family, ect.) Overall, its a good book to read, and if you take the over the top sections with a laugh, its also a very amusing read. My mom loved having this guide for my brother's wedding.

95% of content is for mothers of the bride
This book is pretty basic and could definitely be a book for mothers of the bride. It is all the typical information that books for mothers of the bride would contain. I haven't read any of the author's other books, but I feel certain that this information was just cut and pasted from a book for brides or mothers of the bride. There is very little information specifically for mothers of the groom. I especially wanted information on rehearsal dinners (creative ideas, do's and don't's, proper etiquette, etc.), but there was not a whole lot of information on the subject. I should have returned the book but waited too long.

Great book! I wasn't invited to help very much with the wedding of my son and his fiance though, so it pretty much showed me everything to expect and that's what I really needed the book for the most. My new daughter-in-law planned her own wedding and did a gorgeous job all on her own. I did the same with mine, so I understood. The book really does cover everything you need to know. I ranted on the book so much, the Bride's Mother bought the Mother of the Bride book lol.

Great book!
This is a little book packed with great information for mothers of the groom including everything you need to know, including what the groom's family is traditionally responsible for covering, how to plan the rehearsal dinner, and how to coordinate wedding attire with the mother of the bride. Very helpful.

Great book!!
I bought this book for my soon to be mother-in-law and she loved it! Coming from a family that has only had weddings at the Justice of the Peace, my future MIL said this book was just amazing, hits all the important parts of a wedding, and offers great insights and suggestions! This is a must for any future mother-in-law!

MOTHER OF THE GROOM
This book is right to the point. I wasn't to excited in the beginning of being the mother of the groom. They don't have a lot of play in everything. But reading this book has explained alot to me. I feel better if I don't get included in some of the planning. After all it is their wedding. I am excited for them to start their new life together and will just sit back and enjoy the ride.........

I read this book 5 years ago when my son was getting married. My daughter is engaged, so, I bought it for her to give to her future mother-in-law. It is very informative and gives great insight. Aside from the obvious that I already knew, there are many things I learned from this book.
