This is simply an antenna that captures television broadcast that are freely available over the air (ota). You connect this directly to your tv and, depending on your location it will allow you to see local broadcasts for free. The number of channels will depend on your location. If you are in an isolated area surrounded by mountains and trees, you may get very few stations. If you are in a wide open area, or on the right side of said mountains, you may get a ton of stations. With regards to your recorder, if the recorder supports ota signals, then this should work, but very few set top recorders do this. It's plucking up more channels and has improved some previously iffy channels. I bought this because i read that cable thickness is important. Most of these kind of things have a thin cable, but this one had a thick cable which allegedly is better. I put this in a window and works fine. I did have to buy a converter to plug it into the tv which was disappointing but they are cheap. Beyond that its easy to install. Plug and play.
