Such a great read
This is my third Brom book and I'm still astonished at how captivating his books are. They suck you in and make you fall in love with the characters. I was literally rushing out of work for the past week so I could make the time to finish this book. I loved it.

just wow
Captivating from beginning to end. An entire sub world within a book, you get to watch a ruined man become what he was to be. What a read!

Extremely satisfying
If forced to label this book, I would call it an epic dark fantasy adventure. Overall, I am very much reminded of Niel Gaiman's "American Gods" and Simon R Greene's "Nightside" series, though it remains fresh and entirely its own story.Brom is a very straightforward writer without a lot of extra fluff and just enough description to create a vibrant story. Unfortunately, the copy that I have is riddled with mistakes that any decent editor should have picked up easily. I don't hold them against the author because it's very easy to see how these mistakes occurred (sometimes an improper tense, sometimes a misspelling that spell check wouldn't catch: i.e. "reef" instead of "wreath"), I just wish that the editor had done their job better.I definitely plan to blaze through the rest of Brom's fiction now. I typically read horror, and while this definitely fits the genre, the story itself was a breath of fresh air. I can't commend the world building enough.

What an amazing journey!
Absolutely superb! One of the finest novels I’ve ever read, without question. Lost Gods is one of those books that just takes over your life, that steals all your time (free or not), and which you just dread coming to an end. And so it was for me: I just hated coming to the end of this masterpiece of dark fantasy.Brom excels like few authors I’ve read in two specific ways. First is his extraordinary ability to weave not just one hell (sorry) of a great story, but also to weave complex stories within stories as well, juggling literally dozens of tales along the way, only to then be able to resolve each twist and tie each last strand and loose end up into a perfect, epic package. He also excels in that most wonderful of abilities—that one in which his writing and its characters will won’t leave you after you’ve finished reading, but will stay with you long, long after you’ve finished. One of Brom’s other extraordinary talents lies in his ability to really build and flesh out his characters and to turn them into genuine beings—people and creatures that you genuinely care deeply about and worry for, or simply hate for their evil and ugliness. And what characters! Some are as bright and as lovable as can be but, of course, a good portion are as dark, dangerous and as thoroughly treacherous as the darkest nightmares you could possibly imagine—and then some.So just do it! Jump in and cross that River Styx and marvel as you never though possible at the worlds just below our feet...

NO SPOILERS - Fun, dark, pensive, inventive, thoughtful; Brom incorporates them all beautifully
I really enjoyed this thoughtful and creepy novel. Without giving anything away, I found to book to really make me think about the setting that is Purgatory and how the human soul transfers from one plane of existence to another. The concepts here were really interesting and Brom does a great job of starting the book and delving right into the thick of things. The writing really keeps you turning the pages. I was intrigued by the plot description but didn't read much of the reviews because I did not want to ruin the book for myself. I'm glad I didn't, the ending is worth experiencing without any whispers of what's top come. Their is a good amount of action and bloody battles, which I found myself really drawn into. Again, Brom does a great job with the writing. His dark and developed renditions of demons, various gods, and the assortment of creatures and souls that wander the wastelands of Purgatory are fascinating. The drawings of several key characters contained in the book are a huge plus (perhaps 7 colored pieces if I remember correctly?), they really help add to the imagination and are in Brom's typical dark and fantastic style. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is because I felt part of the 3rd act was a little rushed, and resolved rather quickly. It was still a great read though and I love how it made me think about how everyone's soul is marked, be it good or bad. Brom has one heck of an imagination and I look forward to reading his other novels soon.

Deliciously Dark, As Expected
It’s taken me WAY too long to gather up my courage and finally write this review. The thing is, Brom’s books are intense and deeply rich. They leave me thinking about them way after I’ve finished reading. The illustrations draw me back again and again, and each time I take a moment to look at one of them, I notice more and more that I didn’t see before. I am such a fan of multi-layered and, multi-layered writing, multi-talented creative people!Friends, this book is dark (which should come as no surprise). I was just settling in for a certain kind of horror tale, when he went and, well, threw everything to hell! Things got crazy FAST, and I was left following Chet through one of the places I find the absolute scariest. Seriously, who doesn’t cringe in terror at the thought of purgatory?! And it was even more imaginative, diabolical, and painful than I could have imagined — which sounds just about right for a Brom novel. Tee-hee!I have to admit that my favorite parts were the ones where we encountered these titular Lost Gods. And the illustrations were a wonderful accompaniment, helping me immerse into the story even further! It still amazes me how Brom can weave a story so full of fantasy and darkness, but still center it on characters who stubbornly maintain tenacity, optimism, and/or are just gluttons for punishment (haha!). Sheesh, I don’t even know if I’m making any sense here, but I hope I’m giving you an idea of the magnitude and scope of this novel. It is VAST, it is DARK, it is TERRIBLY WONDERFUL.

Don't Delay Read Today
Amazon helpfully tells me I bought this book in August 2017. Things happen, and it turned out I never got round to reading this until now. My only regret is leaving it so long. This is a great book, a man's quest to save his family takes him to places you couldn't dream of, but Brom describes them well, and keeps you gripped on the story from start to finish.I don't think there's a book from this author that I don't like. I only wish there were more.

Lovely illustrations.
A really beautiful book, the colour plates really bring some depth to the story which, while nothing groundbreaking, is quite charming and keeps you interested until the end.
