Fast read
I would have preferred less explicit sexual encounters.Details of doses and timeline added to the relating of his experiences.Thought provoking words on legal drugs vs illegal and the pharmaceutical industry.

Not much of a Novel...
Well at least not much of a traditional novel as there are only the faintest hints of character arcs, begining, climax and ending. This is simply a journal of someone expounding on his experiences under the influence of various drugs. To be fair the accounts ring pretty true for the most part but they beg the question why even bother to read a fictional account. If you want realistic description of drug use there are plenty of non-fiction sources available. I think this book would probably be great for someone who has never used drugs to get an unbiased idea of some of the highs and lows associated with them. That said, if you've ever used drugs or have friends who do chances are you have similar stories and better. While I wholeheartedly agree with the social commentary here its nothing new or groundbreaking. The few semi interesting characters are never really developed and the gratuitous sex seems forced and pointless. This is a decent pool side read but don't expect fresh insights, interesting prose or any type of dramatic story. Just cheap quasi entertaining drug antecdotes that won't surprise anyone with real drug experiences.

Not just a book about drugs....
it really is so much more! The reviewer in front of me says it better than I could, but I can say you won't be disappointed! I loved this book. It is very funny and offers a lot to think about. I, too, read it quickly (2 sittings!) and didn't want it to end. I liked it so much that when I was done, I looked up the author online and read through all his short stories that I could find. I look forward to reading his other books and hope he writes many more. I love to give books as gifts and this is definitely at the top of my list. Also, the cover is amazing!

Memoir-like novel about a lot more than drugs
This is a very good and true-feeling book, so much so that I sought out the music Helton talks about liking in the various decades of his life. (Beautiful People -- not easy to get.) The feeling it gives you of life rushing by is intense and sad.
