5mm (.20 inches) clear glass point back rhinestones set in hypoallergenic plastic posts for metal sensitive ears. The clear plastic post style earrings are light and gentle for metal sensitive ears. The rhinestones are made of glass and come on plastic backs with rubber stoppers. The back of the glass is plated with a thin metal foil coating that gives the glass more sparkle but this does not come in contact with the skin as it is enclosed in the plastic cup that the rhinestone is mounted in. It would however have to be removed in a metal free environment including some medical procedures. My earrings are not intended for children age 14 and under. Know that the earrings can be removed and they could becoming a choking hazard if they are put in the mouth.
