how big of an area does it cover

It seems to reach out a few feet (2-3) but should be allowed to float around, tied to the approximately 10 foot rope. That way it monitors a larger area. You can also drag it around to concerned areas.

Will this work around docks in a fresh water river?

Yes, Shock Alert was designed to work in fresh water such as pool, lake, river, and fountain. For complete instructions, please reference the Owner's Manual which can be found on the Resource tab of the website www.shockalert.com. Shock Alert must be floating in water to operate effectively. Assure noting is touching the probes on the bottom of device. Shock Alert may NOT detect voltage in highly contaminated water.

will this work with an ipool?

I suspect it would. If it has water and electricity is close, then it would detect the charge in the water. We use it around our dock, but I don't know why it wouldn't do the same thing on any body of water.

is this ABYC tested or compliant?

Thank you for the great question. Shock Alert does not have ABYC certification. Based on our knowledge of the types of instruction and certification that ABYC encompasses, it is our opinion that our product would not fall within their perimeters of interest.
