Q: How do you take the backing off? I've tried pulling and twisting and nothing works

You sort of pinch it to pull the back piece apart.

Q: How do you remove the buttons?

They are very easy to remove with the buttons it comes as a pin so you can clip and un-clip the pin by pushing and applying pressure on it

Q: do you have to remove the button before washing the item?

No...removing the button will damage the pin-retainer.

Q: How in the world do I get these buttons off?? I've tried everything aside from busting into my husband's tool box. I have literal sores on my fingers.

There is a small round piece at the end of the cowboy button, pull on the small round piece and pull back to remove it.
