Does the top (backrest and arms) stay attached to the couch?

Yes. It’s really a neat little couch. The only thing not attached are the foot rests but when couch is unfolded they fit in like a puzzle to make a mat.

Is there a way to dye or change the color of the fabric? I need it to be lighter for my classroom.

I don’t believe so. The couch is wonderfully soft and my granddaughters are on it all the time.
