Really good but some iffy writing
Really good story, great art, but sometimes some of the things Batman says....I just have to pretend the speech bubble has "..." because I can't imagine him saying them, so I pretend he says nothing at all when that happens.

Received item very fast and in good shape.
Tony S Daniel continues his amazing run as a writer of Batman stories. He uses the new Balck Mask in a way to delight old and new fans. The Mr. Toxic story is an excellent example of how far someone will go to live a longer life.

"You must take in the darkness for others who are incapable of protecting themselves from it."
Covering issues #8-12, #0 and Detective Comics Annual #1, it begins with Batman tracking down the Scarecrow and stopping him before a hostage is hurt. Then, Batman must deal with saving Dr. Arkham from the Court of Owls! Batman then encounters the dangerous Mr. Toxic and the Black Mask after his escape during the Court of Owls raid on Arkham! The origins of Batman's training is also told as well as a gripping story about Harvey Dent tying up some loose ends. So, the book goes right through issues #8-12. The first two issues are stand-alones written and penciled by Tony S. Daniel. While one was a tie-in to the Court of Owls event, issue 8 was just a single story about Scarecrow that had no real impact on the following issues. It was slightly entertaining, and only really worth seeing Batman do his detective work to apprehend him. Issues 10-11 find Batman with the villain Mr. Toxic who really has a neat design and a decent story. Again, Tony wrote the issues but Ed Benes, Julio Ferreira, and Eduardo Pansica did the pencil work this time and they are good. Tony writes and pencils the final issue in the Mr. Toxic arc and then the book continues to the Annual issue with Romano Molenaar and Pere Perez on art duty. It ties into the Court of Owls issue but gets a bit convoluted toward the end. The 0 issue has Tony stick to art duties with Richard Friend and has Gregg Hurwitz writing the story and you can really see the writing improvement go from mediocre to great with this pre-Batman origin. There's also a bit at the end regarding Bruce's return to Gotham written by James Tynion IV and Henrik Jonsson on art. The book then goes into the stories following the end of the main issues that revolve around Two-Face that are written by Tony and art duties from Szymon Kudranski. The story's okay and gets a bit boring at times but it works for a short story. Finally, the book closes with a quaint little end-issue story written by James Tynion IV and art by Szymon that finally brings the Joker's face back into the Detective Comics series. Sadly, it's only a few pages long and serves no real purpose other than to show that some of Gotham's cops are real jerks.Overall, none of these stories are particularly great aside from the 0 issue. Mr. Toxic was a good villain but not worth admission price alone. You do get a nice, embossed hardcover with a dustjacket and a tiny variant gallery in the back. So, if you liked Detective Comics Volume 1, you should like this one. This book's even more all over the place with story and you'll be reading 7 different stories; although some are very short. With that said, don't go running to your nearest comic book store without really considering if this is something you'll enjoy.
