Discovering Our Past: A History of the World-Early Ages, Student Edition (MS WORLD HISTORY)

An extremely well-wriiten history book
I have never posted a review on a text book even though I have ordered hundreds of them over the years; however, this particular book is written extremely well. Both of my youngest daughters are using it in their middle school social studies classes and when I placed the order, I assumed that this would be like the other history texts from the past - wordy and boring for tweens and young teens. Although the material spans centuries of early world history, it is well-written and concise and it conveys surprisingly detailed information in relatively few pages. Not only do I enjoy reading it, but my youngest daughter wants to read it in its entirety, too, this summer (her class will only cover one fifth to one quarter of the book at best). There is also a study guide that accompanies the book which we also purchased.

Good textbook for 7th graders
I'm using this book for homeschooling my 7th grade daughter. I like the way it is written and the information that's included in the book. My only criticism is that the chapters are short so I sometimes supplement with additional material. Overall, I think it's a great resource.

Ignorance and politics for your kids, anyone?
This "text" is so full of errors and mis-characterizations that I am astounded that supposedly educated people even tolerate it. Just in the introductory section, for example, the author tells the gullible student that explorers determined the earth was round - but it was Eratosthenes of Egypt who did that - and calculated the diameter fairly accurately, nearly a millennium earlier. In the economics section, he tells the student that scarcity increases demand. But any economist know that scarcity shifts the supply curve leftward, raising the price intersection on the demand curve (reducing demand), and thus raising the market price. The book is filled with Islamic sales pitches - tolerance blossoms while the decrees that deny women equal voice in courts, that compel that infidels be struck on the necks (beheaded), and that divorce is effected by simple declaration by the male (even against little girls too young to menstruate) are never mentioned. Mosques are mentioned in the index 10 times - cathedrals 0. You don't have time in this report to read all I discovered in my copy (2104). It is sloppy in detail and biased in characterization.
