the top of my purchased leather cup dia. is 3" and my pump cylinder measures 2 7/8" in the bore. How do you get 3" into 27/8" cylinder

1/8" isn't that much. You be sure to SOAK the leather cup in water a few hrs to a day to soften it before inserting. Once installed you should have water on it all the time keeping it soft and providing suction to pump your water.....

This is a leather that goes inside a cylinder to pump water to the surface. There is a point on the bottom, 1-1/4" pipe, cylinder is on this pipe and the valve with the leathers are inside the cylinder which is connected to a 3/8' rod to move valve inside cylinder up and down to suck water to the surface. This was use on the old iron well hand pumps.
