Hello, thanks for your question. Our Fire Meshes are designed and guaranteed to last 50 fires. The only thing we can think of that would cause a hole is the use of a fire color changer. I wouldn’t use anything that’s not natural, the long burning logs you buy at the store have chemicals that could shorten the life of the mesh. I use fat wood you can buy in Amazon, or several cotton balls dipped in Vaseline which is a camping trick, cut some kindling. I’ve used mine many times and have had no issues with the mesh lighting it this way.
