The handle sits flat on top of the fan so I don’t think it is included in the height.

Q: Would this work with an open fire

No, unfortunately not. All of these Stove-top fans use a thermocouple driven motor to power the fan. It relies on there being a large heat source directly contacting the baseplate. This it what the "Stovetop" supplies. With an open fire there is no "Hotplate" to place the fan upon.
