In your opinion how long does it take a beginner to begin to play

It depends a lot on the student. Fingers will hurt a little until calluses are built up. I recommend google 'wild wood flower', find one with the chords that list 'G' as the first chord. This banjo is 'G' so that chord requires no finger presses, only need to learn two other chords. Limit practice to 20 minutes or less to start. Most folks will be playing that song well after four or five days practice.

Does it come with a manual for beginners?

Unfortunately it doesn't come with a manual, but getting a DVD or paper manual is easy and depending on your preference you can find them on google for free or watch youtube videos while picking.

This is an excellent instrument to learn to play banjo on. Its modestly priced and good quality for it. I took mine on deployment with me and picked from time to time. Hope that helps.
