Can you hang a 3.5 lb item on the wall with 1 nail?

YES, but NOT with any nail and this assortment are too small mostly. use a 6D or 8D or LARGER nail such as a 16D nail used all over most houses framing for structural work,  Ideally you want to find a STUD behind sheetrock also. or use some sort of adhesive picture hanger, non-nail..... If you find a stud in the area you want to use and drive a 6D or higher nail, it will hold 20-40# and a 16 D about 50 or more #.  For one 3.5 # painting on a wire you can also probably run a 6-16D nail into ONLY sheetrock if nail at a 45 degree angle downward to better distribute forces in the softer drywall, as opposed to finding a stud. BOTTOM line: buy some BIGGER nails 3-4 or more and then experiment: nail in where want then apply your 5-10 # force with hand and verify that 4# is no problem, then forget about it, unless in CA where earethquake forces can dictate that you really NEED to nail into studs, to get 5-10 times the holding power as in only sheetrock.....
