Hope it isn't ever needed, but gives peace of mind
The kit is very complete. The only thing I needed to do was add batteries for the flashlight (2AA) and a few days' supply of personal medications. Women may also want sanitary products. I purchased this for my daughter who is going to college in California. I wanted something to keep by her door just in case. This seems to cover all the bases and I hope it is never needed. My daughter remarked that the backpack itself is excellent quality.

Nice start, but insufficient in itself
First off, this kit has a lot of decent things in it. Items are contained in several reusable zip-top bags which serve both to protect and to organize them. If you had to make due with the supplies in the kit, it'll keep you going for an extra day or three if you're really good at rationing and not doing much else. That said, there are some odd choices made. The biggest oversight is that the included flashlight doesn't have batteries. If someone were to buy this and throw it in their car or closet, when they find out that they need a flashlight they are going to be sorely disappointed. If you order this, be sure to stock a few AA batteries for the flashlight. The bag gave a pack month the same month as I ordered it, so it arrived very fresh. The included food was six months old out of its 5 year lifespan, and was DATREX brand rations. I've eaten those before and they're tolerable for emergency rations. You get one 3600 calorie pack, which is better than nothing and probably sufficient if you're able to remain relatively inactive or good if you've got other food you can supplement it with. Water comes in pouches which keep for a long time, but you only get 1.5 liters, so again you'll want to strictly ration it as that is not very much at all. In addition to the included water there are a couple of purification tablets you can use and a single disposable plastic straw. Yeah, a plastic straw can be useful (especially if you're trying to drink out of a baggie of chemically purified water), but in a kit like this I think you'd either want something more durable than a disposable straw, or you'd want to include a few of them. The shelter kit provides some good redundancy, but it is essentially all plastic or mylar. The light/communication pack contains the previously mentioned battery-less flashlight, a single chemlite, a small oil lamp and ferrocerium striker, and a pack of survival playing cards. The hygiene kit was the expected cheapest possible products, but in an emergency would serve for a day or two.The first-aid kit is pretty much a pack of bandaids, but that's not nothing. The knife is pretty cheap as well, but comes sharp. The gloves are thin and the cordage is as well.In many respects this kit feels like it was thrown together out of the cheapest possible components, but at the same time they would all would be better than nothing. Every time I find myself looking at something that could be improved, I think "Yeah, but if I didn't have anything at all, I'd be happy to have it." Built to a price, for sure.Ultimately, that seems to be the niche that this pack fills. If you have nothing else, this pack could be very useful.

A nice combination of pre-packaged stuff for a grab bag
Inside an emergency-red backpack (good quality) are several sealed containment bags; each labeled with icons. The contents are a wide variety of essentials, or near essentials, for a person caught in an emergency situation, i.e. no food, water, shelter, basic first aide, light or heat.I would say this is for someone who wants a "grab bag" for an emergency, and wants someone else to put it together for them; all sealed up and ready to go. This is that bag. My wife really likes it.If you are a do-it-yourselfer, then this bag is probably not customized for whatever detailed items you would prefer.Overall - an alright solution for one person in a bind for not a lot of money.

Perfect kit to start with!
I have so many good things to say about this kit! It is not perfect, but it is the best one I've seen yet.I have bought a lot of pre-made kits to give to friends. I have also assembled emergency kits from scratch on my own. Any time I have bought an emergency kit for a gift, I usually end up extensively modifying it and adding to it.This kit is different. It does still need some modifications and additions, but it is by far a more complete kit to start out with. Please note, there is a flashlight included, but no batteries. You will have to add your own AA batteries. The first aid kit is actually a basic first aid kit! It isn't just eight bandaids and an alcohol wipe. It is a hard case with a larger assortment of items. Now, myself personally, I would be adding all kinds of things to that first aid kit so it is even more complete. But what it has to start out with is far superior to what is usually included. Also, THANK YOU to whoever actually included feminine hygiene products! Finally!! It is so good that the folks who put these together acknowledge that feminine hygiene is absolutely something that should be included in an emergency bag.Even the bag itself is much better than usual. Much more practical and versatile and also better quality. The bags inside have clearly marked categories and make staying organized much easier. The emergency food bar has an expiration date of 2026.There is plenty of room left in the bag to add an emergency radio, some clothes, some cash, personal documents, and whatever other items are needed or desired. If you are overwhelmed knowing you should have an emergency bag but don't know where to start, this is the bag for you.If you are worried about someone else not being prepared and want to find a way for them to be prepared, this is the bag for you.I could talk about this bag for hours. It doesn't do everything perfectly, and I would definitely modify it for my personal use. But it is so much better than others I've purchased it is refreshing! Long story short I totally recommend this.
