Review: Solid surveillance drive; quiet and reliable so far - Why I ordered this item: My old surveillance drive started clicking after a couple years and I didn't want to risk losing footage right before it died completely. I run a handful of cameras on my NVR at the house and needed something built for that kind of nonstop writing. Likes: * This thing runs 24/7 in my NVR and doesn't get hot or loud. * Setup was zippy. My NVR recognized it right away and started formatting without me messing with any settings. * This drive holds way more storage than I need right now, probably a few weeks of footage from four cameras before it loops around. * It's quiet enough that I don't hear it clicking or grinding through the closet door where my NVR sits. No likes: * It's a spinning drive doing constant writes, so I know it's not going to last forever no matter how it's rated for this. I'll probably be back here again in a couple years. * No included cables or mounting hardware, so if your case doesn't have a tray ready to go you'll need to source that yourself. Would I pay full price for this product: Yes Final thoughts: This is a drive built to sit in an NVR and record footage nonstop. That's all I need from it. If you're running a security setup with more than one or two cameras, get a drive rated for surveillance instead of a regular one. Just don't expect miracles on lifespan since it's still a mechanical drive working around the clock.
Review: Time is Precious especially when your protecting your property - Being a Fan of Western Digital I decided to give their Surveillance Hard drive a try.. I currently have 9 cameras running constantly at my home to keep my property protected. And I had a 1tb drive on my system and had only 4 days of backup which these days is NOTHING.. I now have one day over 2 weeks or backup.. Totally going to upgrade to a 12 tb once I can get it. worth its weight in gold.. Just remember you're not going to be able to do a visual inventory of your stuff every day but with a good NVR and a large hard drive you will be able to periodically check your stuff and notice differences and catch what is going on. The larger the Hard Drive the better chance you have to keep a good eye on your stuff and have evidence in case of a situation. My situation is odd due to having a multitude of resolutions. Honestly All of my cameras (except 2) are from the Same Manufacture and I love them.. Probably shouldn't mention S3VC cameras but sorry gotta say excellent cameras for any good NVR (AMCREST) My cameras have resolutions from 1080 to 5 mp cameras(oldest camera is 720 ). Including a great camera from FOSCAM (which I didn't know it had audio) So you may have 4 or 6 cameras which most people get Standard resolution cameras (which are fine if your just wanting to see what happened without enough resolution to see who it was in most cases) I go 1080 or higher just so I can get good visuals of who or what happened with better ability to see what your protecting. So in a situation with 6 cameras at Standard Definition you will have at more than a month of recording easy. This drive is designed for Security camera recording and should last longer than a regular system drive. Will recommend to anyone who is in the market to buy a hard drive.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: can it replace older hhd in nightowl dvr**
A: Yes. This hard drive is compatible with all recording units.

**Q: What is the difference between 3tb purple wd30purz and wd30purz, very confusing?**
A: Absolutely nothing. They are the same.

**Q: Is this compatible with annke surveillance camera system 8ch 1080p lite h.264+ dvr with (8) hd 1080p outdoor weatherproof cameras cctv security camera**
A: As the owner of South Jersey Surveillance Systems, I can assure you that any WD purple or Seagate Skyhawk hard drive is the appropriate type of storage drive for any and all DVRs and NVRs.

**Q: Whats the difference between this and the red plus?**
A: WD Blue HDDs are mainly used for general purpose storage, they are great all-rounders, and an average user can’t go wrong with Blue.

WD Green is basically same as Blue, but it lacks a bit of performance. However, it is the most eco-friendly HDD, and it’s quite cheap.

WD Blacks are for pure performance including gaming, media, and content creation. Also one of the most expensive HDDs.

WD Red is a NAS drive. It’s optimized for NAS systems.

WD Purple is for surveillance. Advised for 24/7 operation.

WD Gold, probably the most premium of all. Made for a multitude of Datacenter-specific applications.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Easy
*by M***. on December 30, 2020*

Bought this hard drive to add to my Luma surveillance system and it works as expected. With the Luma system it was pretty much just a plug and play set up. So quick and easy I thought I missed a step somewhere. It's recording, though, so all is well. Would have been nice if it came with mounting screws but it didn't (nor was it advertised to come with them). I took two screws from diagonal corners of the existing hard drive to mount this one. The recorder just sits on a shelf so both drives are plenty secure and work fine. You will also need a power cable so make sure you have one on hand. Will order again if needed.
