The plush covering is nice and helps to prevent you being burnt when boiling water is just poured into the bag and can be removed when it begins to cool down if you are not able to get the water reheated. It has a smooth side and a thicker side with ridges. It states to cover water bottle with bag or cloth when using, but I prefer to use it without cloth because it doesn't get hot enough to burn. I fill the bottle half full of hot tap water, screw in the plug tightly, and lay my head on the smooth side of the bag. I've actually fallen asleep a few times as it feels like a warm pillow against my aching jaw. It is the perfect size for my lower back as well. It looks and feels well made and I've not had any leakage from the plastic plug. It works perfect for me. Update July 14, 2017: I'm still very happy with this purchase. It has saved me from much discomfort over the past year and it's still holding up very well.

**Q: Does the hot water bottle smell like rubber?**
A: If you put your nose directly on it, you might, but I don't smell anything bad on my hands or skin after handling...  It's surprisingly better than the typical opaque burnt red colored ones I've used in the past.

**Q: how hot can the water be that you put in? how long does it stay hot (or at least warm)? thank you!**
A: My daughter received this hot water bottle from us.  She says she has put the hottest water from the tap and then hot water from the tea kettle into it.  Hot water from the kettle is too hot to put in by itself.  She reports that approximately 45 minutes later, it is at least warm.  Enjoy!

**Q: Can this be put in the freezer? i would like to use with a diy cold pack solution and keep in the freezer.**
A: I don't think you can keep that in freezer. It is usually used to hold hot water for massage.

**Q: Is it microwaveable?**
A: I honestly don't know but I would recommend against it. I would heat the water in the microwave and pour it into the hot water bottle. However, you do NOT want to put boiling water in this item- not good for it and not good for your skin. . Hope this helps.
