What kind of metal is the clip made of?

It is magnetic....I would guess chrome plated steel.

I’m not sure but they are durable and do work.

Will these BG3 clips snap around a 1/4” wooden dowel?

Will fit around a standard US pencil. 1.125 between snaps / by 3.1416 = .358 max.

How far apart are the snaps?

The snaps are 1.5 inches center to center.

Overall, these are surviving

I did have a couple whose metal buttons fell off, and another whose clip fell apart, but they are so cheap that we can swap them out for another easily enough.
