Although that sounds like a lot, the profile remains low and blends in. I have had it holding my 54 in basketball hoop for over a year. I live in a very windy area and have been through quite a few severe thunderstorms/high wind events including a tornado. The hoop still stands and the bags still look good. They are holding up quite well despite being exposed to the elements including all day sun. I am satisfied with this product. I suggest leaving the sand in the plastic bags they come in and just sticking them inside this bag.
