You should soak the bowl in hot water for 2 or 3 minutes so it is able to act as a heat sink when you begin to shave. Since others mentioned that the metal ring does rust, I removed it prior to using the bowl (BTW - it is not glued on to the bowl - the trick is to dunk the upper lip of the bowl into hot water - that will expand and loosen the metal ring. I use it for cooking rice or preparing Korean Bibimbap with the stone pot heated. Avoid extreme conditions like submerging it in water for days and then suddenly placing it on the burner at high heat. Does discolor and darken from stove/flames. But that’s expected.
