thought-provoking film
Antonio Leblanc (Justin Chon) is a Korean adoptee who is married to Kathy (Alicia Vikander) and stepfather to her daughter Jessie who he loves dearly. Things go wrong when he discovers he can be deported back to Korea which he left as a small child as he is not legally a US citizen. In order to fight the deportation order he needs to pay an attorney $5000.00 which he does not possess and so he agrees to take part in the theft of some superbikes from a store with a group of men. Unfortunately Kathy finds out that Antonio didn't obtain the money legitimately which naturally sours their relationship and leads to their temporary estrangement. However things get back on track when she discovers that he missed a subsequent court appearance to fight the deportation order when a cop colleague of her ex husband decides to have Antonio beaten up so he will miss his court date and thereby be deported. This is so Kathy will remain behind in America with Jessie whose father is her ex husband who will then be able to see her. After not seeing Antonio for days Kathy finds out at the last minute when he is due to be deported to Korea and rushes to the airport where she has a reconciliation with him and tells him that she wants to go to Korea with him with Jessie. However Antonio tells Kathy to remain behind in the US until he has got things sorted in Korea. The film ends with accounts of foreign nationals who were illegally brought to America as children and then who were deported as adults back to their home countries despite living most of their lives in America. It does provoke a debate as to whether it is right to punish such children as these who through no fault of their own get brought illegally into another country
