I am justing getting into this book, but so far it is an excellent follow-up to the Bop Drumming book. John really describes the evolution of jazz into the post-Bop era, and takes you on progressive steps to learning and playing more contemporary jazz. He does more than expanding your capabilities. He provides such fine counsel on what and when to play some of these advanced ideas as well as how.

This book will keep you occupied for years. Don't get it unless you are seriously serious about jazz drumming.

John's books and DVD are just the greatest. They will help bring your musical spirit to life if you read his written word, follow the instructions, and dig in. Provided that you've developed an adequate level of proficiency on your instrument this material along with listening and playing out is about all you'll need if you are serious about being a jazz musician (of course you're studying your harmonic stuff and history too). When I was young I would have kept this wealth of knowledge that John is sharing with us a secret. Do yourselves a big favor and get started on the right track to being a musical and tasteful drummer. I only wish that I could rate this material "10 STARS". ( I guess I just did !!!)

A great book I use with my drumming students all the time. Gets them thinking about their role for ANY style of music, not just bop or jazz. Any drummer would benefit from having this book. I also adapt it to use for instructing students of other instruments and it works extremely well!

Bought this having worked through John's earlier book on bebop drumming. It will take your jazz drumming on to another level, but I strongly recommend you work through the first book before this one, and work through the whole book!! (no short cuts!). I also spent time checking out the artists and albums that Riley recommends in this book. Inspiring and recommended.
