California’s Proposition 65, a consumer right to know law which applies to products sold to California consumers, requires notice of lead and other specified chemicals at certain levels in dietary supplements.  These levels vary depending on the ingredients used, the amount of product typically consumed, the sources of the ingredients and other factors.

The requirement for a warning label is triggered when the amount of certain substances in a product exceeds a certain regulatory level set by California, which is very low in the case of lead, and far less than the standard set by other national and international regulatory agencies, including the FDA.   Because this regulatory level is so low, many ingredients are likely to exceed Prop. 65 levels.
