Also are they smooth?** A: The 8” wide piece is about 8” x 2”. Slate is always relatively smooth. Not polished but this slate is just like slate. **Q: How tall can you stack these up? I need to be able to get up to 20 inches.** A: If you are going up 20 inches you will need several boxes. I used mine in an aquarium and have stacked about 2 inches, then a large piece on top.
