Can I put flour, sugar, etc. directly in the canisters or do I need to leave food products in bags before inserting into canister?

I store my flour and sugar without bags Holds stuff just fine

Yes and no...As air tight as two pieces of tin could be . Not as air tight as a jar though. The tops do fit on tight and takes effort to take them off.
