A Letter to My Dog: Notes to Our Best Friends

After reading about this book I had to order a couple of copies, one for us and one for our friends, also rabid dog lovers (sorry). I loved the concept; I could very easily sit down and write my own letters to my dogs, each of whom has enriched my life beyond comprehension. I could also write about the numbing grief we feel each time we lose one of ours. And now that I've received the book, I must say it is a beautiful product, well-made and printed on very heavy quality paper. But that being said, I have to agree with an earlier reviewer that though the letters are sweet and full of love, after the first handful, they all begin to sound alike, and many are not particularly well-written. Now I understand mine is a subjective observation...what I find dull and repetitive may captivate and bring unspeakable pleasure to others. My more basic complaint about the book is that it's almost impossible to read: the font is not only tiny, it is silver (or gray). The overall look is elegant; the photography and the page layouts are gorgeous, but as sometimes happens, form has trumped function, and trying to READ the book is pure agony. I struggled through about a quarter of the letters before giving up.

So I think I've purchased this book about 4 times already to give away. I have one copy for myself and have given away multiples. I foster rescue dogs and have decided to make it a tradition of mine to give this book to the adopters of my foster babies. I recently gave this book away to adopters and wrote a letter on the inside to my foster dog. I broke down in tears writing a letter to my foster. I can't wait to give more of these books away and write letters to each of my foster babies who have touched my life.This book helps me illustrate to the adopters how much a dog can mean to one's family and how special they are. By giving this away it's my hope that they will love my foster dog the way I did and forever.

The book is great, but the overall size of the book is much smaller than we expected, thinking this would be coffee table size. The only other problem we found is the print is very small. We purchased this for someone older as a retirement gift and we had a hard time reading the small print, so I am sure the gift receiver did as well. Again, the book and pictures are great I just wish they made it bigger.

I chose this rating because I loved the way these dog owners love their pets. JUST LIKE I DO LOVE MINE. Only those who have the privilege of having such a loyal friend would understand. I know I cried, laughed and experienced the same human emotions like those who wrote the letters. Thank you.I would recommend this book to anyone who owns a mascot who has faced illness, happiness, unconditional love and the inevitable passing of time who brings us to their death. One may get another pet but the love will be different because their personalities are different like humans.

An all-around feel good book. Such devotion displayed in each story. I read this book in 2 days and had a hard time putting it down. Each story shows the love between human and canine companion(s). I wish every dog was treated with such love as those portrayed in these stories/letters. I would love to see another book with more stories like these. I am sure there are many more letters to be written and stories to tell. Also purchased a second copy of this book for a friend. You'll want to give this book to all your animal-loving friends.

I saw this recommended on Good Morning America one day during the holidays. They mentioned that Robin Roberts wrote a letter in the book that I really wanted to read. I know how she feels about her pooch, Jack. However, why Ms. Layton started with a very sad story about "Nike" the German Shepherd is beyond me. I almost put the book down right then and there. Then I continued anyway.... And wow! What a book!!! Thank you Robin Layton for sharing the stories and especially the photos. Great book. Can't wait for the second edition!

I loved reading these letters. If you don't know how much a person can love their dog, read this book. It's spelled out in plain words for the whole world to see. The pictures let us see who these special letters are talking about. As for the dog lovers out there, these letters talk about things we already are privileged to know. It's easy to see why dogs are known as Man's Best Friend. Maybe we could request a Volume #2...

I originally saw this book at Costco and did not buy it. When I decided that I wanted to have it, it was, of course, gone. I was happy to find it available on Amazon. The seller was efficient and quick. I received it quickly and in great condition, as described.As a god lover, I found this book both touching and a joy to read. Even if I wasn't a dog lover, I would have enjoyed reading about other people's experiences. Good book.

This is really sweet. The pictures are wonderful and it makes you realise that you are not the only person in the world who loves their dog! It is American.

These books make great gifts. It's touching, funny and heart-warmingly sentimental in it's style but surely echoes what we think of our own much loved dogs.

Absolutely brilliant book, stunning photos, great stories, something to make you cry and something to make you laugh. I can't recommend it highly enough.

I first saw this book in a store in L.A & after flicking through it knew I had to buy it.... If you're a dog lover/owner, or you know anyone that is,then.....It's a MUST... Very touching & emotional book... Beautiful letters written to the dogs by their owners.... Simply adorable. Stunning picture.
