Depends on the situation. It’s more for finding the cable pathway, but could help find a dead short.

Can I trace from a light fixture back to a switch? (I can not find how to turn on a few lights in my new house)

this tracer work's better on energized circuits but will also work with de-energized circuits. if your light is not energized, then hook up the transmitter to it and then use the receiver to follow the wire through walls and ceilings to find your switch. You may have to set the detection level higher on the receiver for this use.

Will this tracer generate an audible tone when connected to 14/2 speaker wire?

Don’t know. I’m deaf and just look at the visual readout.
