Avaliação do livro "The UV Advantage"

Very Important Book But Lacks Detail and Dosage Discussion
"The UV Advantage" was written by the world's leading authority on Vitamin D. Dr. Holick has studied Vitamin D for decades and he has done ground-breaking research on it. He holds very senior positions at a top university. He has also written scores of reports on Vitamin D.Consequently you might be disappointed with this watered-down and somewhat dumbed-down book. I think the problem was the editors, not Dr. Holick.I agree with other Amazon.com reviewers who wrote: "Lightweight introduction to UV and vitamin D" and: "... this book is like a friendly conversation between a well-informed doctor who is giving essential information to a lay audience, but he assumes they don't want much detail."I wanted more detail, too. I know Dr. Holick has it. I was disappointed in the lack of case examples from patients, etc., with names omitted or changed, of course, to make it more interesting. There aren't enough anecdotes.Another Amazon.com criticism was: "This easy-to-read book, backed by 120 citations to papers in peer-reviewed journals (unfortunately not numbered), has an index and a glossary."Why does the most important book by the top scholar have no footnotes?I'd encourage everyone interested in Vitamin D to listen to Dr. Holick whenever you get a chance. There are audio and video recordings online. He is one of the most articulate doctors I've ever heard speak. His speaking, indeed, is better than his writing. He has such a clear mind and has just the right amount of energy in his speaking style to accompany his vital message. Indeed he has the vitality of a man half his age.One thing the book is missing is a full discussion on dosage. The recommended dosage by the government is a joke compared to what Dr. Holick advises. I found out Dr. Holick's recommendations in a radio interview recording online. (50,000 IU once a week for eight weeks and then 50,000 IU once every two weeks.)We should also receive his thoughts on living at the higher end of the socalled "normal" vitamin D levels instead of just within a range. Does this help a little or a lot? (See Dr. John Cannell's discussion of this topic with respect to H1N1.) It would be a great service if Dr. Holick in future editions of this book could address the subject of Vitamin D dosage not only for general lifestyles, but extreme lifestyles, and also extreme problems like epidemics. Vitamin D deficiency has been called an epidemic, but how much Vitamin D should you take during an epidemic?Cannell, for instance, says: "people taking only 1,000-2,000 IU/day, with levels around 30 ng/mL, may risk death from a cytokine storm their body is unable to prevent." (May 2009) Is that a fact? I have no idea. But I want to read discussions of the subject by various experts including Dr. Holick. (I couldn't find any books by Cannell.)This book is a must read but it should have a greater emphasis on obesity because obesity is an epidemic and a huge problem for Vitamin D absorption. I've read somewhere that obese people indeed may need twice as much Vitamin D to get the same effect. Again this brings up the issue of dosage. This is one of half a dozen good books on Vitamin D on sale at Amazon.com. It's probably the best place to start but you may find it leaves you wanting more. See: "Vitamin D Prescription: The Healing Power of the Sun & How It Can Save Your Life." (Fifteen reviewers give it five stars out of fifteen reviews.)Highly recommended for parents, coal miners, Canadians (everyone living in northern hemispheres, actually), and anyone interested in avoiding a litany of common diseases today. How crazy would it be to die young of something when the solution is free (sunshine) or cheap (high dosage supplements)?

Good info but outdated
I liked this book and it does a great job of dispelling the many myths about the dangers of the sun. It also talks about the benefits of vitamin D and goes into detail about all the ailments it prevents. However, the book does not include some vital points I have recently learned about vitamin D in my own research, including:-you cannot get Vitamin D in most places in the world in the winter months, including around the equator. In higher latitude cities you can only get it from about the months of June to August. The UBV rays are simply too weak to reach the surface of the earth from that angle they are coming at it through the atmosphere-on the same note, you also can't get UVB rays during most hours of the day. In my city, Los Angeles in the middle of July, I can only get UVB rays from about the hours of 10am-4pm. It changes as the length of the days do. For higher latitude cities the window is even less.-you cannot shower or wash your skin after going out in the sun for vitamin D. Research has suggested it takes anywhere from a few hours to a few days for the vitamin D to be absorbed by your skin after exposure.I was surprised that this book didn't include the above information, possibly because the research regarding it didn't come out until after the book was written. In any case, it was a quick easy read and very reassuring that spending time in the sun isn't causing me total harm.

Safe sun for health
This book blew me away! Dr. Holick gives you a simple formula to determine your own personal level of SAFE SUN EXPOSURE and healthy Vitamin D levels..Pink skin or sunburn is NEVER acceptable or safe. But safe sun exposure is vital to prevent Vitamin D deficiency.Vitamin D is vital for good health and prevention of numerous illnesses, diseases and ailments. I was always a sun seeker or sun worshipper. In recent years I bought into the sun phobia and scares and avoided the sun.I was recently diagnosed with a serious Vitamin D deficiency and months of treatment are returning me to good health again. This book is a MUST READ for everyone. If you value your health, read this book!I am a firm believer in preventing illness. My recent years of avoiding the sun I loved have proven detrimental.Safe sun exposure is possible when you follow Dr. Holick's formula.Pink skin and sunburn are never safe! It is nearly impossible to get your daily requirements of Vitamin D from food sources.Read the book! Understand what Dr Holick has reasearched and proven. He backs his information up with the other researchers and doctors and his beliefs are accepted by tradtional medicine. My favorite quote in the book is "the blanket statement that UV radiation is carcinogenic is confusing. As a friend of mine put it,saying that UV radiation causes cancer and should be avoided is akin to saying that water causes drowning,so don't drink water.""

ok
Lightweight introduction to UV and vitamin D. No slight intended to Dr Holick who has been and is a key researcher on vitamin D and is presenting important health information to the public. But this book is like a friendly conversation between a well-informed doctor who is giving essential information to a lay audience, but he assumes they don't want much detail. If you have read a few web-pages about vitamin D, you may already know everything here - vitamin D RDA is too low, many people are deficient, deficiency is associated with a number of illnesses, sunlight exposure will give you what you need but don't get sunburned, supplements can also help but are inferior to sunlight because you need to determine appropriate dosage. The book has repeated information, padding (sentences along the lines of 'countless poets and songwriters attest to the enjoyment of sunshine'), while some things that could have been described in depth - like vitamin D toxicity from supplements (or potentially from diet I guess) - get short shrift. If you don't know much about vitamin D and want a high-level introduction, it's fine. If you wanted more detail or science, skip it.
